More Than a Compensation Claim: Getting to Know Lindsay Slater

For Lindsay Slater, being a solicitor is about more than legal knowledge and professional qualifications. It is about building a career she is passionate about, continuing to develop her expertise and making a meaningful difference to the people who put their trust in her.

As an Associate Solicitor in the Personal Injury and Medical Negligence Department at Hopkins Solicitors, Lindsay has spent more than a decade working in personal injury law. Her journey to qualification involved years of practical experience, studying alongside full-time work and raising her family. Today, she brings that experience to a varied caseload, helping people understand their options after accidents, injuries and instances of medical negligence.

But while her career progression is an important part of her story, it is her commitment to her clients that remains at the heart of her work.

A career built through determination

Lindsay began working in personal injury law in 2014 at a firm in Leeds. From the beginning, she was building experience in an area of law that requires careful investigation, an understanding of complex evidence and an appreciation of how an injury can affect someone’s life.

In 2015, she took the next step in her professional development by beginning the Legal Practice Course (LPC). She completed it in 2017 while continuing to work full time and raising her two children.

Alongside the demands of her job and family life, Lindsay remained focused on progressing her legal career. After completing the LPC, she joined the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) as a Graduate Member and spent a year putting together a professional portfolio.

Her hard work paid off. In April 2019, Lindsay qualified as a Chartered Legal Executive, before cross-qualifying as a solicitor in June 2019.

Her route into the profession was one of sustained effort, combining hands-on experience with academic study and professional development. By the time she qualified as a solicitor, she had already spent five years working in personal injury law.

For Lindsay, her career is something she has worked hard to build and continues to value. Her professional development has not stopped at qualification; she remains committed to growing her expertise and providing a high standard of service to the people she represents.

Balancing family life with professional ambition

Family is an important part of Lindsay’s life. Since beginning her legal studies, she has welcomed another child, becoming a mother of three in 2022.

Combining a demanding career with family responsibilities has been a significant part of her journey. However, her family life and professional ambitions are not competing stories. Both matter to her, and she has continued to invest in her career while raising her children.

That commitment is reflected in the milestones she has achieved. Lindsay joined Hopkins Solicitors in 2020 and was promoted to Associate Solicitor in April 2024. In January 2024, she also achieved accreditation with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) as a Personal Injury Litigator Specialist.

These achievements represent more than professional titles. They reflect years of learning, practical experience and a determination to keep moving forward in a career she cares deeply about.

Today, Lindsay continues to develop her knowledge across personal injury and medical negligence work, bringing that experience to the cases she handles at Hopkins Solicitors.

Why the person behind the claim matters

While qualifications and experience are important in legal practice, Lindsay recognises that a personal injury claim is never just a file or a set of documents.

Behind every case is a person with their own circumstances, worries and priorities. An accident or injury can affect far more than physical health. It may mean time away from work, financial uncertainty, difficulty with everyday activities or concerns about what the future holds.

For someone who has never made a legal claim before, the process can feel unfamiliar and daunting. They may not know whether they have a valid claim, what evidence will be needed or how long matters could take. Some people may even feel uncomfortable asking for help.

Lindsay believes that clients need to feel listened to and understand the advice they are given. Taking the time to understand what has happened, how an injury has affected someone and what matters most to them is an important part of providing appropriate legal advice.

No two clients are exactly alike, and no two cases are identical. The issues involved, the evidence required and the options available will depend on the individual circumstances.

For Lindsay, the responsibility of representing a client means treating their concerns seriously, explaining matters clearly and helping them make informed decisions throughout the process.

More than compensation

Compensation is an important part of many personal injury claims, but understanding a client’s situation means looking at the wider impact of an injury.

Someone who has been injured at work, for example, may be worried about lost earnings and whether they will be able to return to their job. Another person may be struggling with the consequences of a fall or an injury caused by an accident in a public place.

Medical negligence cases can raise particularly difficult questions, especially when someone is trying to understand whether their treatment caused avoidable harm and what that means for their future.

Lindsay’s work covers employers’ liability, public liability, general personal injury, medical negligence and industrial disease claims. Each area brings its own legal and practical challenges, and each requires a careful assessment of the facts.

Alongside representing people who have suffered injuries, Lindsay also advises individuals and businesses facing personal injury claims. She is currently leading the development of Hopkins Solicitors’ defendant personal injury offering, helping clients understand their position, assess liability and evidence, and navigate the claims process. Her experience across personal injury litigation enables her to provide practical, clear advice tailored to each client’s circumstances, whether they are pursuing a claim or responding to one.

Her role is to investigate the circumstances, consider the available evidence and explain the options open to the client. This may involve obtaining medical evidence, assessing financial losses, communicating with insurers or other parties and negotiating where appropriate.

Just as importantly, clients need to understand what is happening with their case and why particular steps may be necessary. Legal proceedings can take time, and clear communication helps people understand the process rather than feeling left in the dark.

The outcome of a claim can never be guaranteed, but clients deserve considered advice and an approach that takes their individual circumstances into account.

Continuing to grow at Hopkins Solicitors

Since joining Hopkins Solicitors in 2020, Lindsay has continued to build her career within the firm’s Personal Injury and Medical Negligence Department.

Her promotion to Associate Solicitor in 2024 recognised her hard work and strong client satisfaction scores. Her APIL accreditation also reflects her continued development within personal injury law.

Based at the firm’s Mansfield head office, Lindsay is proud of her connection to the local area and her commitment to helping people in the community.

For her, professional development and client care go hand in hand. Continuing to build legal knowledge is important, but so is applying that knowledge in a way that helps clients understand their position and consider their next steps.

The trust people place in their solicitor is not something to take lightly. Contacting a law firm often comes at a difficult point in someone’s life, and the advice they receive can help them make sense of an unfamiliar situation.

Lindsay takes that responsibility seriously. Her career is important to her, and so is the quality of service she provides to each person she represents.

Helping you understand your options

If you have been injured in an accident or believe that negligent medical treatment may have caused you harm, you may be unsure whether you can make a claim or where to begin.

Speaking to a solicitor can help you understand your position, the evidence that may be needed and the options available to you. It is worth seeking advice promptly, as legal time limits may apply.

At Hopkins Solicitors, potential personal injury clients can arrange a free initial 30-minute consultation. Where a claim is suitable, the team can explain the funding options available, including whether a No Win, No Fee arrangement may be appropriate and the terms that would apply.

You do not need to have all the answers before making an enquiry. The first step can simply be explaining what happened and asking for advice.

A career shaped by commitment, with clients at its heart

Lindsay Slater’s journey into the legal profession has involved years of practical experience, continued study and a determination to develop a career she values. From beginning work in personal injury in 2014 to becoming an Associate Solicitor and APIL Personal Injury Litigator Specialist, she has continued to invest in her professional growth while raising her family.

Yet her work is not defined by qualifications alone. At its heart is the responsibility of helping people navigate difficult circumstances, understand their legal options and feel that their concerns matter.

For Lindsay, being a solicitor means combining experience and expertise with a genuine commitment to the people she represents.

If you need advice following a personal injury or potential medical negligence, contact Hopkins Solicitors to discuss your circumstances and find out what options may be available to you.
